In 1291 all glassblowers were forced to move from Venice to Murano due to the fire risk. It is also alleged that the embankment also was intended to better protect the secrets of glass blowing that way. On pain of death, the glassmakers were forbidden to share their art. These people lived like prisoners on the island.
